Butterscotch Pie?

Yesterday it was back to Rural Retreat to pick up a butterscotch pei that I had ordered from the Duch Pantry & Deli.  This is an Amish store with spices, meats and even a few Amish crafts. The pie looked good when I got it but it didn't look like a good home-made pie. It had a whipped cream topping instead of the meringue frosting. When I got home I had to cut it to see what it tasted like. It tasted like butterscotch but it was salty. Needless to say I was dissapointed. It is very hard for me to fine a good home-made butterscotch pie.
On the way back to the motorhome we saw these young turkeys close to the campground. There are 10-12 of these turkeys that have been hanging close to the campground that we see from time to time.

Yesterday we went to the Wythville Walmart to get our medicines transfered and refilled.
From there we headed south to small town of Rural Retreat. A nice town of around 1200 population. This is one of the many towns that we have seen that train rails go throught the middle of town.  Many of these towns had their hay day in the early 1900's. The town of Rural Retreat and the surrounding area shipped wagon loads of cabbage by rail all around the country and by the looks of some of the houses made some money doing that.
We had dinner in Joey's Country Kitchen. The food was good and if we come this way again we will eat here.
Here is one of several old hotels that are for sale.
This is the former Sprinkle Hotel that is for sale. We just love to drive through these old towns and look at the old big houses and the charm that they have.
A flock of Canadian Geese on the lake a few miles out of town.

The old train depot is still standing.
This is beautiful country with the different barns, new and old.

No Frog

I did take the cover off the a/c yesterday but I didn't find a frog or anything else up there to make the strange noise we have been hearing.  The critter hasn't made the sound in a couple of days now. Maybe it has jumped off?  We walked a few times around the park.  Nancy's back is giving her problems so she has to take it easy for now.  We hope it is going to feel better soon. We did some cleaning and more things in the motorhome, then relaxed watching the western channel.

Looking for a Frog

Not a lot happened yesterday,we just stayed in the campground. It was 62° when we awoke.  We took advantage of the cool temps and set out in our loungers for a little bit of time. After a short time I had a few projects that needed my attention.
Today I will get on top of the motorhome so I can take the cover off the front airconditioner.  We have heard what we think is a frog, yes a frog coming from somewhere up around the a/c.  So I need to look for it.

Wythville,Va

Yesterday it was that do the laundry thing. So after searching the internet to see if there are any laundromats in Wythville,Virginia I found one so off we went.
Also while on the internet I looked to see if there were restaurants with good reviews which we could have lunch/dinner.  We did get through with the laundry in time for lunch at the Log House Restaurant. Well as you would expect this place you pay not only for the food but also for being able to eat in an old building that is on the National Historical list.  We chose to have the "Big Farmers Delight" sandwich which was very good and tasty. The plate luches ran from $15,99-$20.00 needless to say those are more than the budget we have for lunch or dinner.
For a log house this is a big house that is spread out. I think maybe it has been added onto several times because when you go through the outside garden there are a few gift shops. We didn't go in the gift shops.
The house is interesting and they let you go through by yourself looking it all over.  We ate at the table across fom this fireplace.

A nice collection of flowers out back.

Even had seating outside if that is your choice.
After a nice dinner we went to Walmart to pick up a few things.  It rain most of the day so we didn't do our walking.

Around the Campground

We changed sites yesterday because I couldn't get a clear shot to set up the Direct TV Satellite.  The site that we moved into I now have a signal.  I also dumped the tanks and filled up the fresh water tank while I was moving the motorhome.  I grilled some pork chops and Nancy fixed the sides.  Then we took a walk around the campground.

Stony Fork

We woke up earlier yesterday in order to get to the Stony For Campground in the Jefferson National Forest. I thought my chances of getting a campsite would be better. These type of campgrounds usually fill up on the weekend.  The truck traffic is heavy on I-77 but it didn't bother us.   After fueling up at the FlyingJ in Wythville it was a short few miles to the campground.
We got to the campground now to see if there are open sites. Well it looks like we got there early enough because there were several open sites.
After backing into site 23,leveling the motorhome letting the slides out and hooking up the electric we took a walk around on the road. We didn't want to go in the woods.
Maybe if we did we wood have seen some more blackberries.
There are signs stating to beware of rising waters in the low areas.
Looks like low water is in the ares instead of high water.  There are a bunch of minnows in the water.

Little Richard's

Yesterday it was dinner at Little Richard's BBQ
We had hush puppies with our dinner. We were surprised when they brought them out because the were small marble size, but tasted very good.

We had the pork barbeque with fries and cole slaw. The barbeque and slaw tasted good but the fries looked and tasted like they had been waiting on us for a couple of hours.
They had a nice arrangement for the condiments and a roll of paper towel to take care of the sauce that might have missed your mouth.
Today we will be going north in hopes of getting a site at the Stony Fork Campground which is in the Jefferson National Forest.

Mayberry USA

After a night in the Walmart lot in Mt. Airy off we went to the campground.
We arrived shortly. I stayed at the Walmart because I was wanting 2 full days at the campground.
This is a very nice campground and it has a WIFI that has a very strong signal.
After getting settled and hooking everything up we went to The Hungry Farmer Restaurant. It is located just across the Virginia line and it has a country buffet. It is not in any of the local tourist booklets around the area and I ask the lady in the office of the campground for a good place to eat which was what she suggested.  It is on US 52 and a short drive from Mt Airy.
On the way back I stopped at this very large roadside market with farm fresh fruit and vegetables. I bought several different vegetables which had a very good price.
We then got back to Mt. Airy(Mayberry). Former home town of Andy Griffith and the town of Mayberry in the tv series.
They had the sheriff squad car from the tv series.
Here is Floyd's Barber Shop. I peeked inside but didn't see Floyd. The price of a haircut is $8.00 which in this day and time is a good price.
We went to the Andy Griffith Museum, but didn't go in.
We only came to the museum to see the bronze statue of Andy and Opie.  There they will be always, having there fishing poles in hand gong down to the pond.  Walking through down you can hear Andy singing and on down the street you can hear the whistling of the theme song from the Andy Griffith TV Show. All of the stores are cashing in of Andy and the tv show with posters, hats t shirts and anything else they can print on.  We had a nice day playing tourist.

Mayberry here we come

We left Uwharrie Forest after emptying our tanks and filling up with fres water.  The trip north was nice and I drove ever so slow.  As we got to Winston-Salem on US 52 they were having construction and detoured us around it,which took us through the city. There's nothing like driving a motorhome pulling a car through city streets.  After going up and down streets we were through the detour.  Getting close we could see Pilot Mountain in the distance. Not clearly but we could see it.
Not much better vision as we got close because it had been raining and the fog was coming up,but that is Pilot Mountain.  Today we are going into Mayberry,USA.  I have to use the campground WIFI becaus I can't get a signal on the Verizon Air Card.

Yesterday we thought we would go down to the lake before noon time and get some sun. We thought it wouldn't be hot at that time of day.  We set up our lounger's and started enjoying the sun,but sooner than we wanted to it got real hot on us.  So in a little less of an hour we were ready to come back and enjoy the airconditioner.
Today we are headed north to Mt. Airy(Mayberry USA). There is a Passport America Campground there and we are in hopes they have a site for a couple of days.

The last Day

Yesterday was another inside day.  I had an upset stomach most of the day and late yesterday evening I took some "Maalox" which settled it down.  Today will be another do nothing day other than looking at the things around the motorhome getting it ready to go on the road tomorrow. I will need to climb up on the top to check the solar panel and clean them. Being under the trees I hope they don't have any sticky tree sap on them.
We have had a nice 2 weeks of looking around this area and just enjoyed our lazy time here. The signal for the verizon wifi card wasn't good here so the computer was really slow.  So slow that the email I received with the things that people sent me to watch you tube wasn't possible.  But never fear I've saved them to watch when I have a good signal.

Just a lazy day

We are just going to hang around the campground walking the trail and straighting out things in the motorhome home for the time we are here.
I've seen this tree on our other trips around the trail but I had a closer look at it. Feeling of the bark on the tree I found out it was hard and almost petrified, which was wierd.
Not many but a few flowers along the way.
 A toad stool or two.
This didn't look like a wild flower. It looked more like a  hibiscus. How did that get out in the woods?
