Let's Walk

We went for our walk today. Peach and Don joined us for part of the way. They walked 3.1 miles which was great(hope they will keep walking) Nancy and I walked 5.2 which gave us a total of 29.4 for the week. We walk 6 days a week,we rest up on Sundays and go to church. I think we are about to get serious on our walking. It is fun to travel to different places and have different walking areas. Don,Jim and I went to the flea market yesterday. I bought some 12 volt bulbs for the motor home which I always need.

It is a 2 day maximum stay. These are free sites, they do have a donation box. This is a good place to over night right on the Kanawha river.

The River

Here I am sitting and enjoying the cool breeze on the river bank. There's a coal barge passing along every now and then. Lots of pleasure boating here. There's a strip mall on the other side of the road with KMart,Kroger and some eating places. Did I mention another free night camping? This makes the 25th free night in a roll, makes me soooo happy.

County Jail

This is the old county jail used up to 1986. The bottom part was the sheriff's residence and the top was the jail. There was a lady that cooked 3 meals a day for the prisoners. She furnished the food and cooked the meals for .84 cents a day. The building is a museum with lots of old stuff and history in every room. It was very interesting to tour through it.

Old Court House

This is looking up at the Doddridge County court house in West Union,West Virginia. Built in the 1800's. I like the old court houses with the clock on top. The old ones are a work of art much nicer than the new ones. Posted by Hello

County Fair

We went to the Doddridge County Fair this evening. We don't usually do the fairs. The only reason we went was Sherry and her girls,Amanda and Dee were singing. There were several groups that sang before the main group(Chosen Few) came on stage. Of course Sherry and the girls did a good job singing. Another good day and evening

Sistersville,West Virginia

We visited the town today that Mark grew up in. We went to the Wells Inn Hotel. Mark worked the desk in this motel when his family lived here. Mark says the hotel is much nicer now. We went in to look and the guy(Doug)that is the manager knows Mark so he gave us a complete tour of the place. Oh thats Nancy and Sherry in front.

The Parlor

As you go in the parlor is on the left. The old organ is in the right hand corner. I imagine in the early days they would sit in here listening to the organ or read and chat the night away.

Upstairs

The hotel has three floors. Going down the hallway we passed the fire hose, ready just in case.

Shoe Shine?

In the hallway we passed this old shoe shine chair. Usually they had a young boy or an old man shining shoes anytime you need one.

Bedroom

This is one of many bedrooms. No two are decorated the same way. Years ago when they were going to remodel the hotel they took all the furniture out and had an auction. The towns people bid and got most of it,then they told the owner to take it back inside they wanted it to look the same as it did for years. Although this place is old and furnished old it is cleaner that any chain motels I have been in.

Pub

Down in the basement is the old pub and another dining place. I guess it got the name because of all the gas and oil wells around. The date is 1894 on the bar.

Gaslight

After the hotel tour we walked through the Gaslight Theater. This is a small 200 seat theater that has live entertainment .
Mark has performed here from time to time. I have heard when he was in school performing on a daily basis he was a local celebrity, Posted by Hello

Ferry Ride

After the day of touring we took the small ferry boat across the Ohio river. On the other side is the small community of Fly. I have no idea how it got the name Fly.This was another good day.

There is a small mountain stream that comes down the mountain and makes a small waterfall beside of the tunnel. It is nice after walking out here on a hot day and sticking your hands in the cool water. We are having another great time at another great place.

Tunnel

This is the tunnel that we walk to each day. It is about 3/4 mile long and has water and mud in it so we have never walked through it.

Trail

This is part of the trail that starts 50 yards from where we are parked. It is part of Rails to Trails that goes through West Union. It is where the railroad used to come through years ago and they have taken up the rails and ties and have made hiking trails. These are all through West Virginia. The foto is a bridge going over a state road.

We are here in West Union visiting our youngest daughter,Sherry. We are able to be free parked behind her house in the church parking lot and an electric cord running from her house. We don't have any plans so we don't know how long we will be here. Thats the nice thing about full timing is to not make any plans.
